What is this trend about

Flash Step is built around a real dance move, not a meme originally created for social media. The move, known as Shanshenbu (闪身步) or "Flash Step," comes from the Anhui Flower Drum Lantern Dance, a traditional Chinese folk dance.

It is a quick evasive movement where the dancer rapidly shifts their body to avoid an incoming object or action.

It’s kind of a cool movement…right…?

The clip used in the trend comes from an older instructional video featuring Professor Zhao Tiechun of the Beijing Dance Academy. The footage was recently rediscovered online, and the instructor's unusually fast and precise movement turned it into a meme.

What helps the format travel is that the joke requires almost no explanation. Whether the setup involves a broom, a parent, a delivery rider, or a moving vehicle, viewers immediately understand that someone is trying to avoid something.

Why it works

The sudden cut to the Flash Step clip works as the hook even if viewers do not understand the audio or the original cultural context.
